Origin of Mother’s Day And Father’s Day

Posted on June 19, 2010

Father's Day is a celebration to complement Mother's Day in celebrating fatherhood and male parenting. It is celebrated on the 3rd Sunday of June and may vary in different countries. It is usually celebrated typically involve dinners with father and some family activities. The first celebration was believed last June 19, 1910 in Washington.

Since there is Mother's Day, there is also Father's Day, and the origin of Father's Day was to give a partner with the Mother's Day Celebration. Now let us consider the origin of Mother's Day.

It is came from the custom and tradition of Mother Worship in Ancient Greece which give glory to Cybele, a great mother of Greek Gods, and it is observed around the Vernal Equinox. It is also similar with Ancient Roman called Matronalia that gives dedication to Juno. This tradition also adopted by several religious denominations including Anglicans, and in the Roman Catholic calendar it is known as Laetare Sunday, the fourth Sunday in Lent to give honor to Virgin Mary, as they call it as the "Mother of God" (not a biblical teaching). Mother's Day is celebrated in the Second Sunday of May of every year and also vary in many countries.

There are several kind of day celebration such as Teacher's Day. But instead of celebrating the father's day or mother's day for an specific day in a year, why not show love to your father or mother everyday or go out with them not just in a single special day, but any day of the year? This will give you more stronger relationship and love to them.

Do origins really matter? Christmas for example was chosen in December 25 to be dated with the Pagan Roman Festival marking the birthday of the unconquered sun and give worship to Saturnalia (and not to Jesus' date of birth which is around October and not December) You may "google-it" to prove the history I am talking. Despite of people know that several holidays are originated in Pagan origins, they still feel that it is not wrong to celebrate them, they are not thinking that some holidays are from false worship, but they just think that it is a chance to have a family bonding that gives them a opportunities to draw close together. You might feel the same, But you might ask, do origins really matter? Of course it is, For example, you saw a candy lying in the gutter, would you pick up and eat? That candy is unclean. It is also the same with those celebration, that candy seems so sweet but they have been picked up from unclean places. So "Keep on making sure of what is acceptable" -Ephesians 5:10 and "Touch nothing unclean" - Isaiah 52:11. If you are thinking about family bonding, you can have it any day of the year without specific date.

  1. Always proofread, there are some mistakes.

This article is interesting, many people especially those who are proclaiming christians celebrates many events that came from pagan celebrations and customs like this. They always believe what other people are saying, but true christians “do not believe every inspired expression, but test the inspired expressions to see whether they originate with God, because many false prophets have gone forth into the world.” – 1 John 4:1-21. It’s very important to study God’s word because “This means everlasting life, their taking in knowledge of you, the only true God, and of the one whom you sent forth, Jesus Christ.” – John 17:3
